Gaskell House Garden

Randall Thorp have been involved in the proposed recreation of the garden to Elizabeth Gaskell’s house, Plymouth Grove, Manchester, since 2010, and have assisted the Manchester Historic Buildings Trust in securing a £1.8m HLF grant.

Manchester Historic Buildings Trust have recently moved another step forward in the process of restoring the house in which Elizabeth Gaskell wrote many of her best known works. The restoration of the exterior of the building is complete and restoration of the interior as a centre for Gaskell studies is about to commence. The recreation of the garden will follow on.

Randall Thorp have been involved since 2010:

  • As members of the design team
  • With Dr Ann Brooks, garden historian, preparing the Period Garden plan for submission to the HLF

We are currently assisting MHBT in:

  • The final fund raising exercise
  • Developing the volunteer gardening team
  • Developing  the relationship with the Friends of Swinton Grove Park, which is adjacent to the house
