  Port Wirral

A major new port is being considered for the southern banks of the Mersey where the Manchester Ship Canal opens out into the estuary.

  The site extends to approximately 90 hectares and proposals also include new road and rail infrastructure. Although much of the site is brownfield land, an extensive area of secondary woodland has become established along the waterfront.

Randall Thorp is providing advice on landscape and visual issues including:
  • An assessment of the contribution of the existing tree cover to landscape character and visual amenity in the area – including views across the estuary;
  • Discussions with the Local Planning Authorities;
  • Research into the landscape history of the site;
  • Input into the site masterplanning process;
  • Preparation of a Landscape and Visual Impact Assessment; and
  • Preparation of a comprehensive landscape mitigation strategy – including consideration of opportunities for off site work to help integrate the proposed facility within its wider landscape setting.
Development of the landscape strategy has taken account of nearby conservation and recreational areas and has investigated opportunities to contribute to Mersey Waterfront Strategy objectives. The emerging proposals have been shaped by our thorough understanding of the strategic and policy context.
