| St Peter’s Church is a landmark for people driving into Ashton-under-Lyne from Manchester and the motorway network. The church grounds and neighbouring West End Park form an island surrounded by three lanes of traffic. The park was underused, in poor condition with overgrown trees, and had lost its sense of purpose. |

The site has been completely redesigned in the style of a simple civic green with open lawns, flowerbeds and trees. Randall Thorp took the project through from start to finish in nine months.
Our work included:
- consulting local people and other community stakeholders
- developing the vision and drawing up detailed plans
- obtaining the necessary formal consents to the project, which lies within a conservation area and contains a listed building
- providing the information the Diocese of Manchester needed to grant a Church Faculty more speedily than usual
- seeing the work completed on site and meeting the time requirements of European Regional Development Funding
The area now makes a positive contribution to the townscape of Ashton, forming an attractive gateway clearly visible from passing cars as well as a successful public open space for local residents and pedestrians. |
