This 6 ha urban fringe woodland formed part of the extensive redevelopment of a former brewery site in the Wilderspool area of Warrington. Randall Thorp were responsible for the consultation with the local community, the landscape masterplan and overseeing the project during implementation.
In order to promote the community aspect of the woodland and ensure a real sense of local pride and ownership towards the project, Randall Thorp devised a variety of engagement initiatives. Local residents groups contributed to the design brief and sat on a steering group to oversee the project. Local businesses were encouraged to donate prizes for competitions; local schools were involved in poetry and creative writing competitions as well as a competition to design a logo for the new woodland.
Over 400 people from local schools, residents groups, workers and volunteers were involved in tree and bulb planting projects and hundreds turned out for the official celebrations to mark the opening of the woodland. |
