Randall Thorp created a landscape vision to introduce a nucleus of high quality landscape around the terminal buildings, to create a sense of place and a welcoming arrival to Liverpool. A palette of both hard and soft materials were chosen using inspiration from the surrounding Mersey estuary. The use of local stone and plant species links the airport with its surrounding area and strengthens its identity.

The introduction of semi mature Scots Pines to the busy area between the terminal and the new hotel and car park has softened the predominantly hard landscape and created a more comfortable and human environment for passengers.

The development provided the opportunity to present the yellow submarine as an integral part of the airport setting.
